Resolve Manual Handling Training

Risk assessment. Injury prevention. Performance optimisation.

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, employers must give staff information, instruction and training on the manual handling risks they face (HSE manual handling guidance).

In 2024/25, an estimated 511,000 workers in Great Britain were suffering from a work-related musculoskeletal disorder (MSD), with the back mainly affected in 221,000 cases. MSDs caused 7.1 million lost working days (HSE, November 2025).

These injuries don’t just impact employees’ health—they also cost businesses time, money, and productivity.

If your workplace lacks proper manual handling training, you’re increasing the risk of injuries, lost productivity, and rising absenteeism.

The good news? Proper manual handling training by an expert in spinal rehabilitation can significantly reduce these risks.

Resolve Manual Handling helps you protect employers and employees.

As expert consultant osteopaths we  specialise in the delivery of onsite (bespoke) and public Manual Handling Instructor (‘Train the Trainer’) Assessor Courses. Onsite (bespoke) Practical Skills Courses in your employees’ working environments teaching ‘BackSafe’ manual handling techniques and practices with the specific inanimate loads that your workforce lift, carry, lower, push, pull and team handle.

What Are the 5 P’s of Manual Handling?

The 5 P’s of Manual Handling are Plan, Position, Pick, Proceed, and Place. They aim to help trainees learn better techniques that can prevent injuries and make lifting easier. Trainees need to understand the importance and process so they can lift and move things...

Your questions answered..

Can Manual Handling Training Be Done Online?

Yes, manual handling training can be done online,

But…

The real question is should it be?.

While an online course might teach you the basics, research shows that hands-on, practical training is far more effective particularly when it comes to learning good techniques when lifting and preventing injuries.

Think about it this way if you were learning how to lift weights at the gym, would you trust a 30 minute video tutorial alone? Or would you feel safer having a coach there to correct your posture and guide you through the movement? Manual handling should be considered the same, if not more important as thing can go wrong leading to loss of earning and medical expenses.

Online training can be useful for covering theory, understanding risks, and learning about health and safety regulations. But when it comes to actually lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling safely, nothing really compares to real-world hands on practice with an expert. HSE provide guideline that training should be practical and hands-on because people learn best by doing, not just watching.

At Resolve Manual Handling, we believe training should be more than just a tick-box exercise. That’s why our courses focus on real-life, interactive learning that helps employees not only understand but apply safe lifting techniques in their daily tasks. If you want training that sticks, that’s engaging, and that truly protects your workforce from injuries, in-person training is the way to go.

So, while online manual handling training is available, if you’re serious about safety and compliance, investing in effective expert hands-on training is the smarter choice. Want to learn more? Get in touch with us today!

How much does staff training cost for manual handling?

The cost of manual handling training can vary depending on factors like the number of participants, course length, and specific requirements. Prices can be from as low as £29 per work force attendee with large groups. For train the trainer it can be from around £275/trainee for 8 attendees with onsite training.  At Resolve Manual Handling Training, we offer tailored face to face training courses designed to teach safe lifting techniques, proper posture, and risk assessment skills to keep your team safe and compliant. For detailed pricing information, I recommend visiting our website or contacting us directly to discuss your organization’s needs.

Can you do manual handling without training?

Technically, yes you can do manual handling without training, but the real question is, should you?  Without proper training, you’re far more likely to injure yourself or put others in danger, especially when lifting heavy, taking on new tasks or anything involving teamwork. It’s like trying to lift weights at the gym without knowing the right technique—you might manage for a while, but sooner or later, poor form catches up with you.

There also needs to consider the responsibilities from employees and employers that the HSE guideline enforce.

Manual handling is one of the biggest causes of workplace injuries, and many of them can be avoidable with the right training. Learning from experts doesn’t just tick a box for compliance, it gives you the skills to lift and move safely, reducing strain on your body and lowering the risk of long-term issues.

At Resolve Manual Handling, we don’t just teach theory; we focus on practical application with effective techniques that keep you and your team safe.

If you want to avoid injuries, lost workdays, and unnecessary risks, proper training is the way to go.

How long is manual handling training valid for?

Despite the enormous influence of training and work-related injuries Manual handling training doesn’t come with an official expiry date, this doesn’t mean you should take it once and forget about it. Like any skill, techniques can slip over time with bad habits creeping in without you even noticing.

So, what time should we work to?

Many trainers and businesses refresh training every 1 to 3 years, especially in high demand and high-risk jobs where lifting, carrying, or moving loads is a regular part of the day.

Like going to the gym with manual handling you need to practise whilst being aware of technique with expert coaching to keep you safe, prevents injuries and stay strong.

If it’s been a while since your last session, maybe now is the time to refresh your skills.

What does LITE stand for in manual handling?

LITE (or sometimes TILE) in manual handling stands for Load, Individual, Task, and Environment, though remembering what the anagram isn’t enough. It’s all about assessing the situation before you lift, a quick and simple way to do a mini risk assessment.

To keep yourself and others safe to prevent injuries and industrial incidents you must understand What are you handling? How heavy or awkward is it? Are you physically capable of moving it safely? Is the space around you safe and clear, or are there obstacles that could make things harder?

It really is that simple and whilst these might seem like small details, they make a huge difference in preventing injuries. That’s why regular expert training is so important it helps you build the habit of assessing each task properly, thus reducing unnecessary strain on your body. At Resolve Manual Handling, we go beyond the basics, teaching practical, hands-on techniques that make lifting safer and easier. If you want to protect yourself and your team utilise the LITE process regularly.

What are the five principles of safe manual handling?

This is a common question and can be answered in various ways such as, The five principles of safe manual handling are Plan, Position, Pick, Proceed, and Place. This equates to understand the task at hand using a mini risk assessment such as TILE.  Whilst these are the foundation for lifting and moving anything safely, let’s be honest, just knowing the words isn’t enough to protect you from injury. It’s like reading about how to swim, you might understand the basics, but when you are in the deep end, it’s a different story.

Planning is where it all starts. You need to take a moment to think about what you’re lifting, what the load is including how heavy or awkward it is, where it’s going, and whether you’ll need help. Then comes to lifting good positioning is vital. How you stand, how you move, and where you place your feet, all play a huge role in staying safe and balanced. Picking up the load with the right technique, using good form and technique helps protect you from common injuries such as back pain. Once you’re moving, the key is to keep things smooth and steady, avoiding any sudden twists or jerks. And finally, placing the item down with control, again form and technique rather than just dropping it. This process makes all the difference for both your safety and the condition of the item.

But here’s the thing: these principles work best when taught by someone who truly understands the body. That’s where expert-led training comes in especially from someone like Francis Connor, who specialises in musculoskeletal disorders. With expert instruction, you don’t just learn the rules, you learn how to apply them to real-life situations, in your workplace, with your team, and in a way that prevents strain and injury and specific to you.

At Resolve Manual Handling, we believe the most effective training happens face-to-face, where our expert trainers can see how you move and coach you in real-time. It’s practical, engaging, and based on years of clinical and workplace experience. If you want to make sure your team isn’t just ticking a box but lifting smart and staying safe, that’s where we come in.

Is Manual Handling Training a Legal Requirement in the UK?

Yes, manual handling training is a legal requirement in the UK.

But…

It’s not about ticking a box for training’s sake. It’s about protecting people at work from injuries that can easily be avoided. Whether you’re an employer or an employee, the law expects you to take manual handling seriously.

The legal duty comes from the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, which clearly state that employers must avoid hazardous manual handling where possible. When it can’t be avoided, it’s their responsibility to assess the risk and then take steps to reduce it and that includes providing proper training.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) doesn’t say how long or how often this training should be—it’s not about a one-size-fits-all course. Instead, training should be relevant, practical and job specific. It must help workers understand how to lift, carry, push or pull safely based on their actual tasks. That way, everyone knows how to reduce risk and prevent injury before it happens.

For employers, not offering manual handling training could mean falling short of legal health and safety obligations. And for employees, knowing the right techniques protects your health, keeps you working, and gives you the confidence that you’re handling things properly literally.

At Resolve Manual Handling, we offer one-to-one manual handling training that’s practical, tailored, and designed to keep you or your team safe and legally covered. If you’re a small business owner, team leader, or self-employed tradesperson, now’s the time to make sure you’re doing things right.

How to become a manual handling trainer?

If you’re considering becoming an independent manual handling trainer, then you’ll need to go to a training provider that offers the appropriate course. It is important to know that unlike some professions there isn’t a governing body that oversees this role in the UK. That means there’s no one-size-fits-all route or compulsory licensing authority. Instead, the quality of your training depends heavily on who trains you. Think of it a bit like becoming a personal trainer, anyone can technically show someone how to lift weights, but if you want to do it well, safely, and professionally, you need guidance from someone who understands not just the moves, but the mechanics, coaching, and communication behind them.

This is why it’s so important to train with a provider that offers more than just a certificate. At Resolve Manual Handling Services, we give you the certificate, however we are specialist in manual handling training. That means we teach you not only the correct manual handling techniques and legislation, but also how to coach others, engage a group, and tailor your approach to different learning styles and workplace environments. We focus on developing your confidence, teaching presence, and ability to assess and correct handling behaviours in real-world settings.

By training with experienced professionals who understand both the science of movement and the art of instruction, you’re setting yourself up for long-term success. So if you’re looking to train your staff to oversee you manual handling training for workers on production line, warehouse facilities, abattoirs or manufacturing then we can help you step into a training role that makes a real difference in workplace safety, make sure you learn from trainers who walk the walk, not just talk the talk and simply make it about picking up a box.
